1000 infantry soliders gotta run 500m to kill 5 mortars. They’re equipped with the PPSH-41 SMG, so about at less than 100m, they should be able to shoot but first the need to pass this deadly route. Of course, if they had rifles, they would snipe mortars down, but that’s not the case here. Stalin himself came to do a quick motivating speech to his comrades before the assault. After he realizes, his troops die left and right, some even refuse to fulfill orders that got its own consequence.
