The RTS veteran developers of studio Relic return once again with a new entry in the Company of Heroes series. I remember fondly when the first game came out and promised awesome, tactical battles with a graphical fidelity that rivaled a console action game. It combined classic RTS tropes like basebuilding with unique tweaks like destructible environments and suppressive mechanics for infantry.
With Company of Heroes 3 they now focus on something different and that is how the singleplayer campaign is being played at entirely. Instead of going through story driven missions in chronological order, you create your own pacing and story by moving your troops and companies across a giant tactical map of Italy. It reminds me of the Total War series in a very good way. I was a bit worried at first that the campaign would be too dragged out because of random battles and skirmishes, but luckily you can auto resolve those smaller battles and just focus on the actual bouts that make a difference and progress the story and frontline. It’s very cool and hope to see this style of campaign being implemented in future updates as well.
Some things that impressed me less were the graphics which really aren’t all that much better compared to Company of Heroes 2 and many of the smaller skirmish battles are too easily won by just rushing. The proper missions are all varied with great pacing and can offer quite a challenge, but the skirmishes are just about sending as many men out to all the command posts and quickly win.
