Heart Machine’s Hyper Light Drifter is a masterclass in the “Show, don’t Tell” technique in story telling as instead of using written lore to explain the struggles of its characters and the background of the world they inhabit, the game uses its breathtaking visuals and gorgeous environments to convey its story. By stripping away the words from the narrative, players are left with an experience unlike most other games out there as instead of being told the story, they feel the story, which resonates with them so much more.
Even though it will never match up, let’s try to put words to the visuals that the game shows to see if we can tell the story of Hyper Light Drifter!
